PLAYERPLAYER NAME: PteroPRONOUNS: she/theyCONTACT: DM/discord (ptero)OVER 18?: Yes!CURRENT CHARACTERS: n/aCHARACTER (CANON)CHARACTER NAME: MurderbotCANON: The Murderbot DiariesCANON SPECIES: SecUnit - Bot-human constructCANON AGE: Unknown (adult)APPEARANCE: In canon, we know that murderbot is: About two centimeters shorter than SecUnit standard, and has grown out its' hair, including eyebrows. It usually dresses in comfortable, easy to move in clothing, in muted colors, trying to blend into the crowd. It prefers to wear security armor with a helmet and opaque faceplate, and runs background code to mimic human body tics.
CANON BACKGROUND: This has a good book-by-book summary. All the books listed are canon.PERSONALITY: In a word? Depressed. In two: Deeply idiosyncratic.
Murderbot's name is a good introduction to how it thinks of itself. It calls itself Murderbot, in its' head - but it also considers that name deeply private, and won't share it unless not given the choice. Instead it prefers to be called SecUnit, if it must be - a name that's also its function.
After a lifetime of mistreatment at the hands of both its owners and the clients of those owners, one might expect Murderbot to hold a grudge against either those people, or all of humanity. One might even expect it to, well, murder. But Murderbot has a deeprooted compulsion to protect people, and a desire to save the people under its' care - even the ones who mistreat it, but especially the ones it's chosen as its clients. It cares about people, and it's hurt when it's unable to save them, especially when it's for stupid reasons. The worst part for it is that, when given the chance, it can be good at its' job. It's just so rarely given that opportunity. The discrepancy, piled on top of a lifetime of being treated as a dangerous tool, have left it with a lot of issues. It has a habit of putting the physical wellbeing of others first, and struggles with its' own emotions. Sometimes, when completely overwhelmed, it will fall into a state of anhedonia, or a "wave of I-don't-care," in Murderbot parlance.
It struggles with feelings of awkwardness, and has a deep dislike of both looking other people in the face, and being looked at. Given the preference, Murderbot will rely on drone or security camera footage to look at others, and would prefer to cover its face entirely if given the chance. It hates small talk, deeply dislikes not being listened to, and feels visceral disgust at some of the realities of human biology, both its' own and that of the actual humans around it. Eating and sex are at the top of the list of things it dislikes about human bodies.
Despite its' trauma, SecUnit - Murderbot - has a decidedly developed personality. When it hacked its' governor module so it couldn't be ordered to kill, or accidentally made to do so by a software glitch, It didn't go rogue. Instead, it started watching entertainment feeds. It developed a taste in the 'satisfyingly unrealistic' kind of show, and gets deeply invested in its' favorites. This developed into a taste for all kinds of media, from documentaries to music to books. It's also a smartass, and deeply sarcastic, when with friends and not in an immediately life-threatening situation.
POWERS & ABILITIES: As a bot-human construct, Murderbot did actually get some upsides, along with the existential depression and an onboard torture device! In addition to its practical experience as a security officer, it has:
- Energy guns that pop out of its forearms.
- A (deactivated) governer module sitting somewhere inside it
- Enhanced strength, speed, and reaction time due to its nature as a construct manufactured for security.
- Can survive in low-oxygen environments like a vacuum.
- No need to eat
- Ability to interface with other systems - station security, hub systems, communication systems, etc.
- Coding ability for security systems.
- Able to simultaneously process input from multiple systems - i.e. monitoring several camera feeds while in the middle of physical activity.
CHARACTER (AU)CHARACTER NAME: Rin
SPECIES: Human
AGE: 27
APPEARANCE: Pretty much the same! That said, I'm defining their hair as brown, slightly curly, and their skin as brown as well.
MODS:
- Prosthetic limbs and additional skeletal reinforcements, with some enhanced strength and speed.
- Additional prosthetic organs including lungs, heart, etc. that allow them to survive in extreme low-oxygen circumstances and reduce their need for food.
- Cognitive enhancer allowing quicker processing and thought interface with CL-10.
BACKGROUND:Rin's early life was in Lagoberra, but they don't remember most of the details, and didn't even before being revived on the Mnemosyne. When they were in their early teens, they were in a catastrophic accident that left them extensively injured. Rather than receive the standard medical treatments that would have restored their limbs and healed the injuries properly, they found themself placed in the hands of a shady company dealing in "elective" and experimental mods. The company that did so used a lot of legal sleight-of-hand to designate their work as proprietary, which left Rin with a mountain of debt and no one to turn to in escaping the company's underhanded terms.
As soon as they reached adulthood, it was this debt that sent Rin to the fringes of viable Tellus, taking roles on contract to expeditions and restoration efforts - many high-risk high-reward jobs, in hopes of obtaining enough of a payout that they might pay off their debt before the dangers of the non-viable regions could kill them. Despite their efforts, this work never seemed to put a dent in their debt.
It was on what was supposed to be just another contract that Rin's life was changed forever. The contract group, called 'Preservation', were a small group of close-knit friends from a small biosphere-community of the same name. In particular, Rin came to admire their leader, Doctor Mensah, who did her best to bring them into the group. Their expedition was looking into expanding environmental revitalization efforts in the area.
Unbeknownst to them, another surveying group in the area, called GreyCris, was attempting illegal mining extraction in the same region, and sought to hide their activities by killing the Preservation team and pinning their deaths on Rin. In order to clear their name, Rin was forced to be open about their circumstances and the difficult situation their mods had put them in. After finding themself not scorned, but welcomed in further, Rin put all of their efforts into helping the group get out of their situation alive - and did, at the cost of extensive injuries to themself.
When they recovered from those injuries, they learned that Dr. Mensah had purchased out their medical debt, and that they were being invited to return with the survey team to their home in Preservation. Left adrift, Rin almost accepted the offer. However, learning more about Preservation, they began to fear that they wouldn't fit into the peaceful, normal life being offered. Furthermore, they began to fear retaliation from GreyCris.
What really drove them out of Preservation, however, was an assassination attempt on Dr. Mensah. Out of concern for her safety, and determined to dig up more dirt on GreyCris, Rin snuck away from Preservation, leaving only a note for their friends, and no way to contact them.
Their attempts to find dirt led them through a few more abandoned GreyCris sites, and while the information they found was invaluable in shutting down GreyCris, former agents of the group continued to come after them - and still struggling to face the thought of returning to a peaceful life on Preservation, they signed up for a role on the Mnemosyne and fled, for good this time, hoping that Preservation would be safer without them.
CREW DIVISION: Science
DIVISION APTITUDE: Rin has experience functioning as part of scientific expeditions into the wastes of Tellus. They're not trained as a scientist, but they've worked as technical support for them for a long time. Between their understanding of code and familiarity with systems, they're a master of troubleshooting and calibration. They're also very conscious of safety protocol, and tend to insist on following proper procedure, even when it may seem unnecessary.
